Unconquered

A recently released movie 'Invictus' got me wondering where the title came from a few weeks ago. A little google search led me to this short poem by William Ernest Henly. This is the text compliments of wikipedia:

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

The opening of the films trailer was Morgan Freeman reading this poem as Nelson Mandella, The story is that this was written on the walls of his cell when he was in prison. I think its an amazing poem and it gives me chills when I read it. I can't wait to see this movie, partially because of the story behind the characters but also because it is about an amazing rugby world cup year.
